The advisory board is supposed to support the ITB in the development and operation of its research program. In addition, it gives advice to the bodies of the ITB and the University of Bremen in order to ensure that the institute fulfils its tasks.

Every three years the advisory board does evaluate the work of the ITB in detail based on a research report including research perspectives. The board also makes suggestions for the institute's future work.

The members of the ITB advisory board are appointed by the University of Bremen for three years.
