AI Pioneers – AI and the future of Education

Problem statement: The transformative power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) extends across different sectors, including education, but it is still unclear exactly what impact AI will have on learning, teaching and (European) policy. For teachers and trainers in adult and vocational education, there are many uses of AI, such as new ways of adapting learning content to learners' needs, new processes for assessment and improving guidance for learners. AI systems can help interpret activities in vocational and adult education and link theoretical and practical learning. There is a continuing need to improve knowledge and understanding of emerging technologies and also to differentiate their use in education.

Research questions:

- What framework conditions enable the long-term development of a network of pioneers in adult and vocational education with regard to the use of artificial intelligence?

- To what extent is AI already being used in adult and vocational education in different European countries?

- What are the implications of the use of AI for data protection, ethics and European values?

Research approach:

A total of 10 project partners from seven different EU countries are involved in the AI Pioneers project network (Germany, Greece, Portugal, Italy, Spain, Cyprus, Estonia). Project actors and other stakeholders in adult and vocational education and training in the countries of the participating project partners are surveyed at different points in time (expert interviews; online surveys).

Results:

The project will focus on building a sustainable network of AI pioneers, reaching out to teachers and trainers, researchers, and policy makers. The project will also focus on developing policy recommendations, toolkits and implementation guidelines for AI pioneers, as well as identifying, developing and testing AI use cases in education. The involvement of relevant stakeholders such as training companies and vocational schools is at the focus within the project.
