ReSoLVe – Reinventing Subtitling for Language Learning in Vocational Education

Idea

During his apprenticeship, Juan, an 18 years old nurse produces a short video, explaining how to do ergonomic bedding. He prepares English subtitles for the video in his class and uploads it to draufhaber.tv. In Italy, other apprentices in the care sector use Juan’s video and prepare Italian subtitles for it in their English-class. Similar videos are produced by German apprentices in the geriatric care with a migration background. In this case the videos are subtitled in the apprentices’ mother language. By subtitling videos, language skills of apprentices will effectively be strengthened for learning within the work process. The video production itself fosters professional identification and supports the development of media skills.

Knowledge of foreign languages and mobility are two sides of the same coin. Mobility is a “basis qualification” for European employees. The care sector is especially eligible for this project due to an increasing migration background of the employees as well as of the clients. For a long time, subtitles have been disregarded as a didactic instrument. By the middle of the 1980s it was shown that subtitles do not draw off attention from the spoken word, but they are always being noticed as additional information. Web 2.0 offers the opportunity to provide audio-visual contents independently with subtitles. The production of subtitles is an active method of learning languages because it requires various considerations and use of context knowledge.

ReSoLVe aims at developing the German video platform draufhaber.tv to European usability. draufhaber.tv should become a European video platform which is used by young people during their vocational orientation or training in order to explain how to solve occupational tasks. Thereby it provides a module in European information space as well as in European space of lifelong learning. By applying highest European standards of data security, draufhaber.tv offers young people appropriate space for their self-produced videos. The platform will be translated into English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Polish, Romanian and Russian. The establishment of a multilingual video platform aims at spreading professional or practice-oriented contents produced by young people across Europe. In ReSoLVE, apprentices in the care sector are preparing their own explanatory videos on a small work task and subtitle them in foreign language classes. This allows an exact match of professional activities and foreign language. In a second step, those video resources will be exchanged among partners providing learning opportunities on foreign work practices.
