Accompanying young people's vocational orientation processes!? - On the Perspective of Socioeconomically Disadvantaged Parents in the State of Bremen

The phase of professional orientation at the transition from school to work or university is a seminal one in the lives of young people. It not only influences individual life courses, but often also sets the course for the reproduction of social inequality. Not only young people feel strongly challenged in this transition process, but also teachers express insecurities - especially when it comes to dealing with difference and heterogeneity in this context. Constructive and difference-sensitive cooperation between teachers and parents or guardians offers a variety of opportunities to relieve the burden on all those involved. At the same time, knowledge, trust and confidence are needed to establish it. Socio-economically disadvantaged parents in particular are much less likely to be involved in cooperation and asked about their perspectives, so that decisions about careers and studies remain a question of social background.

This dimension is evaluated in the six-month project "ZEBO – Collaborating with socio-economically disadvantaged parents in vocational orientation" as a "Deepening the Practice of Professional Orientation in the State of Bremen” in cooperation with the IÖB - Institute for Economic Education, Oldenburg. In the sub-project presented here, Prof. Dr. Alisha Heinemann and Julia Tietjen (ITB) turn to the perspective of parents and guardians from socio-economically disadvantaged households. Within the framework of question-based interviews, they will be asked about their assessments, needs and wishes for cooperation with their children's teachers. The collected data will be analyzed with the help of grounded theory and recommendations for teachers, school administrators and educational policy makers will be derived from it.

The model project runs from March 31 to October 31, 2022 and is funded by the state of Bremen.
