Congratulations to Julia Tietjen on her PhD!

Julia Tietjen has written a dissertation entitled ‘Motherhood and Equality: Intersectional Perspectives on Living Conditions, Negotiations and Decisions.’ The defence of her dissertation took place on 16 June 2025, and Julia Tietjen has now received her doctorate with distinction. For three years, Julia Tietjen researched the question ‘How do living conditions influence the decisions of mothers in parental relationships who desire equality in heteronormative contexts?’
Thesis defence Julia Tietjen

The defence began with a 30-minute presentation in which Julia Tietjen presented the central parts and results of her work. This was followed by an hour-long question and discussion session in which Julia Tietjen was able to demonstrate her comprehensive expertise. In particular, she showed how relevant the topic of equality in parental relationships still is today and how important it is for educational discourse and various areas of educational work. With her dissertation, Julia Tietjen therefore makes an important contribution to highlighting the heterogeneous perspectives and realities of (multiple) marginalised mothers and their position as subjects and individuals.

The members of the examination commission were: Prof. Dr. Alisha M. B. Heinemann (University of Bremen), Prof. Dr. Robert Bahr (University of Bremen), Prof. Dr. Nadine Rose (University of Bremen), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sabine Grenz (University of Vienna), Dr. Lisanne Heilmann, Dr. Christine Siemer and Dr. Kristina Kühn (all three also from University of Bremen).

We warmly congratulate Julia Tietjen on her doctorate with the best grade!
