Institut Technik und Bildung (ITB) welcomes new colleagues from artec Sustainability Research Centre

The artec Sustainability Research Centre, founded in 1989 as the Research Centre for Work and Technology, is an interdisciplinary centre of the Universität Bremen dedicated to sustainability research, with more than 20 researchers and administrative staff. The members of artec have been unanimously accepted as members of ITB by the ITB Institute Council. The relocation is since the 19th February complete – the next step is to grow together.

artec consists of the following departments:

- Political Ecology (Prof. Dr. Michael Flitner)

- Social-ecological Transformation (Prof. Dr. Leonie Tuitjer)

- Social-ecological Governance & Justice (PD Dr. Stefanie Baasch)

- Climate Change & Mobilities (Dr. Johannes Herbeck)

While projects addressing sustainability have long been part of ITB’s research activities, the topic has not previously constituted a dedicated research focus. This will now change. At the same time, artec has already worked on questions related to vocational education and training (VET), although not as a central focus. New departments are being established within the ITB.

We are very pleased to strengthen the topic of sustainability through artec@ITB and to establish it as an essential element of ITB’s research profile. At the same time, ITB will continue to build on its established strengths in analysing the relationship between work, technology and vocational education and training. These include especially research on artificial intelligence and digital media, Industry 4.0/5.0, workprocess-oriented teaching and learning, heterogeneity in VET, the education and training of teachers and trainers, as well as the governance, comparison and development of national vocational education and training systems.

A warm welcome to all our new colleagues!

Michael Gessler

Chairperson, ITB
